Rupert Candy Attorneys Inc. is more than just a law firm; it’s a business built on the right principles in order to put into practice what’s best for their clients.

Practical. Efficient. Exceptional. Those three words best describe Rupert Candy Attorneys Inc., a high-performance boutique law firm serving South Africa and beyond.

From its modest beginnings in 2017, Rupert Candy Attorneys Inc. has grown into one of Sandton’s most respected boutique legal practices.

Today, the firm advises clients across South Africa and internationally, built on a reputation for technical excellence, strong ethics, competitive rates, and consistently fast turnaround times.

Founded by Managing Director Rupert Candy, an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa with Right of Appearance in the High Court (Johannesburg and Pretoria), the firm is grounded in deep experience and a disciplined, solutions-driven approach.

Candy’s career spans service in leading corporate law firms, extensive insurance litigation exposure, commercial disputes, and a strong focus on constitutional and media law.

In September 2025, the firm expanded its national footprint with the opening of its Cape Town office in the heart of the Cape Town City Centre, near the Western Cape High Court – a reflection of its growing client base and strategic presence across key commercial hubs.

A career defined by rigour, strategy, and high-stakes litigation

Before launching the practice, Candy served as a senior attorney in the dispute resolution and insurance law team at Webber Wentzel, the South African alliance firm of Linklaters. His portfolio included acting for three of South Africa’s four major banks in specialised banking litigation and representing two major international insurers in professional indemnity and medical malpractice matters.

His background also includes experience at specialist litigation boutique firms in Sandton, a stint as legal consultant at a major telecommunications company, and serving his articles at the esteemed Woodhead Bigby Inc. in Durban.

Candy holds an LLB (UKZN), a postgraduate certificate in Medical Law (University of Pretoria), and a Certificate in Sports Law (with distinction) from the University of Pretoria. He is enrolled with the Law Society of the Northern Provinces and is an active member of the Durban High School (DHS) Foundation.

In 2025, Candy was honoured with the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Anti-Racism Award, recognising his firm’s ongoing commitment to justice, equality, and public-interest work.

As a sign of his distinguished career and legal expertise, Candy often appears as a legal analyst for television broadcasters such as ENCA, Newsroom Afrika, and the SABC. He has also provided commentary for digital publications such as The Daily Maverick and News24.

Further afield, one of his matters was also commented on by the Global Freedom of Expression Institute, which is situated at the University of Columbia, New York, USA.

A diverse, multi-disciplinary litigation practice

The firm specialises in commercial litigation and dispute resolution, with a strong emphasis on insurance law. It represents clients in both the short-term and long-term insurance sectors, and has acted in complex disputes involving business interruption, indemnity claims, financial services regulation, and personal injury litigation.

Media Law, Defamation, and Reputation Protection

The firm has significant experience in media law, defamation, privacy, and reputational matters. It has represented clients before the Press Council, Press Appeals Panel, and the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA). Its work in this sector includes matters involving national broadcasters, major digital platforms, and print media publications.

Sports Law

The sports law practice continues to grow, driven by Candy’s specialised qualifications and sector expertise. The firm represents a leading PSL football club, sporting associations, and various athletes across disciplines.

Constitutional and Public Interest Litigation

Pro-bono work remains central to the firm’s identity. The practice has been at the forefront of significant constitutional and human rights cases before the South African courts in recent years. It has acted on behalf of public-interest organisations such as the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Right2Know Campaign, frequently in matters involving media freedom, access to information, and the enforcement of fundamental rights.

Among its landmark achievements, the firm represented the Nelson Mandela Foundation in its historic litigation against AfriForum regarding the public display of the apartheid-era flag. The Equality Court ruled – and the Supreme Court of Appeal later affirmed – that such displays constitute hate speech, harassment, and unfair discrimination under the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act. This landmark ruling reinforces South Africa’s constitutional values of dignity, equality, and non-racialism, and highlights the firm’s commitment to advancing human rights in practice.

A firm recognised on the continental stage

The firm’s steady rise has earned it wide recognition within Africa’s legal community. Since 2019, Rupert Candy Attorneys Inc. has been nominated every year for the African Legal Awards, a testament to its growing stature in the industry.

The firm secured a category win in 2019, cementing its reputation as one of the continent’s most promising legal practices.

A modern South African success story

As a 100% black-owned legal practice, the firm represents the future of South Africa’s legal landscape – agile, sophisticated, principled, and fully aligned with the country’s transformation objectives.

Its clients include major banks, insurers, telecommunications companies, municipalities, private corporations, sporting bodies, and leading public-interest organisations.

Despite its rapid growth and expanding national footprint, the firm remains committed to its founding philosophy: Legal work must be practical, efficient, and results-driven – always delivered with integrity.
